A Post Mortem September 29, 2009

Thinking back just about a year ago, I was sitting behind my desk, neck-deep in work and wondering what can the ideal hobby for a techno geek who has a medium-sized family be. And then, after an intensive research time window, decided to go back properly to digital photography.

And its been almost a year, and it sure is a crazy trip for me to start two blogs, own seven lens, two Nikon DSLR bodies, and what not in that 330 days! And I am enjoying more or it incrementally on a daily basis. Just pure fun…

Back then, spending over $800 for a camera is pure lunacy in my dictionary, but here today, a $1799 camera body alone is what my mind now perceive as a good investment! It’s interesting how the brain works really…in terms of value system on things and objects.

Canon 7D Priced Lower than the Nikon D300s September 29, 2009

For one, its a first that Canon’s APS-C flagship is priced lower than Nikon’s APS-C flagship. For another, it may present a degree of appeal to potential buyer to first evaluate Canon’s alternative before parting with their hard-earned dough to Nikon.

But the sobering fact that noise performance will not be the strength of the 7D kinda threw, a wet blanket to any prospective buyer in my opinion. With dual processors under the hood, battery life will probably be half-six too. Lastly, the single memory card bay slot is just so 2008…the need to use a combination of dials, directional knobs and buttons just to navigate the menu is still a big no no for me.

No auto-bracketing too? But in all fairness, let’s hope its advanced technology can overshadow the law of microelectronics to become a formidable rival to the D300s.

Let me try to get my hands on one to run it through…

DIY Solution for Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6G VR II September 28, 2009

Now, for those of you who owns the older Nikkor 18-200mm lens, here’s a piece of good news for you. I have just improvised a very effective double-purpose solution to prevent both lens creep and sweaty palms – Nike Terry Wrist band!

You just get a pair of them off the Nike retail outlet and slip it onto the lens barrel! That’s it really! Now, you can still focus by turning the lens barrel as before while maintaining a firm grip on the entire lens, preventing any form of lens creep. Try it and let me know.It works for me.

Thankfully, my lens doesn’t creep as reported all over the Internet on the 18mm position but will do so, when extending to 35mm. In a way, my sweaty palm (in very hot day shoot) can also now rest on the Dri-fit wrist band, taking those moisture away from the lens itself.

Knowing that WordPress is notoriously well known for squishing all the colors out of every uploaded photos I took, I have decided to put some of the more interesting shots in a Picasa gallery, where one can see each picture in a better color palette.

So, enjoy and have fun!

To see the full effect of the wheel spin, I decided to lower the shuttle speed down to 1/640 second, and it works like a charm!

Good money, good beer, little work involved…at least when there’s no accident. It’s kinda relaxing for most as they put on the cap of a spectator.

My very first panning exercise with a camera and high-speed cars…well, turn out quite well as I pre-focus and shoot all through the net barricades! At 1/1000 second, I could still achieve some wheel spins but the composition is way below average in my opinion…

Oops! And if you set a shutter speed beyond the speed of the cars, you get stationary parked cars images instead (like the one above)!
